Sanitation and Hygiene still a challenge in some parts of Fort portal City

The Deputy Mayor Fort Portal City Honorable Marunga Stella has observed that some parts of Fort portal Tourism City have poor sanitation facilities and this needs to be addressed with immediate effect to avoid the outbreak of diseases.

During a joint monitoring exercise that was organized by the Fort Portal City Sanitation Coordination Committee meeting which was supported by NRDI (Natural Resources Defense Initiative) with funding from GIZ/European Union, the committee inspected Kiculeta Cell, Rukongora cell and Kabundaire Farmers market and observed a lot of irregularities in terms of sanitation and hygiene.

According to Honorable Marunga Stella, these communities need to be sensitized by City authorities about the dangers of not having proper sanitation facilities.

“The landlords of these places need to be brought on board and sensitized about which sanitation facilities to have, otherwise the open defection that is being carried out in these places is putting our water bodies (River Mpanga) at risk,” she explained.

According to Ndamira Joseph Musirikale the Counselor representing Nyabukara Ward in Central Division Fort Portal City, it is viable that technical staff work hand in hand with the Political wing to ensure that these places start observing proper hygiene to avoid tarnishing the image of the City.

“Our City is known for being the cleanness in the whole Country, let us work hard to maintain. it will really be a shame for One of the City suburbs to have an outbreak of cholera,” he said.
