A section of Youth in Upstream Nyamwamba, Kasese District have been trained in Stone Development as a livelihood skill.

This was after the locals realized that River Nyamwamba has a lot of stones which in most cases turn hazardous leading to too much havoc for the natives.

According to Edgar Muganzi the Executive Director Natural Resources Defense Initiatives (NRDI), NRDI with support from Integrated Water Management and Development Project (IWMDP) under the Ministry of Water and Environment has embarked on restoring River Nyamwamba as well as improving the livelihoods of Residents in that vicinity including the Youth.

“In our attempt to restore River Nyamwamba we saw it necessary to improve the livelihoods of residents of the affected areas as well. That is why we zeroed on skilling the youth in stone product development so that they are able to earn a living,” he said.

Muganzi explained that the Youth take over 70% of Uganda’s Population and out of 100% of Youth who graduate from different Universities and other tertiary institutions only 25% get jobs, a reason why many of them indulge in unacceptable behavior.

According to   Bomera Richard     the Mayor Bulembia Division in Kasese District, he is grateful to the Ministry of Water and Environment and its partners for thinking about skilling the youth in his area.

“It was so thoughtful for Government to bring our Youths on board through Youth skilling, this will help them to get involved in an income generating activity which will in the end improve on their livelihoods
