River Nyamwaba catchment development model

Kasese communities in Western Uganda face increasing danger from floods.

The nature of risks is more closely tied to their proximity with River Nyamwamba which bursts its banks almost annually, displacing communities.

Due to the above hazardous occurrences, the Ministry of water and environment under Integrated water Management and Development project (IWMDP)  contracted some Non Governmental organizations of which NRDI is part, to come up with nature based solutions to save River Nyamwamba.

Among the nature based solutions that are to be adopted,  were planting  of indigenous tree species , allowing forests to regrow, restoring wet lands, switching to restorative agricultural practices such as cover crop rotation that support healthy soils.

According to Mr. Edgar Muganzi the Team leader NRDI, this was to be achieved through sensitizing communities about the importance of planting trees and  the  need to avoid environmental degradation practices  that have in a way led to the disastrous climate changes and hence worsening the situation of River Nyamwamba.

The Ministry of Water and environment  in that regard, developed River Nyamwamba catchment development model  which was unveiled to the communities that thrive along River Nyamwamba during the commemoration of the Water and Environment Week in Kasese.

This model was basically explaining the practices they can embrace  to conserve the environment in a bid to protect River Nyamwamba.
