Authorities in Kasese District have complained about the lack of water in a number of schools.

During a refresher training about the Terms of Reference for the District Water and Sanitation Coordination Committee meeting that was organized by NRDI with funding from GIZ, the Senior Education Officer Kasese District Ms. Masika Kulthum Moshi said that a big percentage of schools in Kasese District don’t have water.

“Although we have a number of NGOs putting up water sources for public use in Kasese District, it is unfortunate that schools are never considered under such arrangements,” she said.

She explained that areas of Nyangorongo, Kikorongo, Munkunyu,Nyakiyumba and Maliba have no nearby water sources and this has somehow  contributed to the rate of school dropouts.

According to Mr. Tusiime Tinkasimire Sam, the Team Leader for Rural Water at the Ministry of Water and Environment Regional Offices in Fort Portal, water is a basic need in schools in order for children to concentrate.

“ For pupils to concentrate in class,  they need clean and safe drinking water, so let us take it as a priority to bring safe  water sources closer to our children,” he said.

He appealed to Kasese District to put any possible ways and provide safe drinking water for children at school.
